A BaKon Wrapped Halloween: A Candy-Filled Adventure with Kids Ask Authors Answer
Join authors Janine Masi Landreth and Leigh Ann Thompson for a fun Halloween story and an unforgettable kids’ Q&A filled with giggles, curious questions, and behind-the-scenes fun.
Welcome back to Kids Ask, Authors Answer, a joyful video series where children’s curiosity meets author creativity! Each episode brings together real kids and children’s book authors for a read-aloud followed by spontaneous, unscripted Q&A sessions.
The twist? The authors never see the questions ahead of time, so every answer is genuine, often funny, and always full of heart.
In this Halloween edition, hosts Amy Doslich and Samantha (Sam) Howard-Els celebrate the spooky season with A BaKon Wrapped Halloween. It's a rhyming picture book that takes one silly pig on a candy-filled costume adventure. After the story, kids get to ask the authors questions. And in this episode, we have some special kids from Chapel Street Primary School’s Sunbird Library in Cape Town, South Africa jump in with imaginative questions that keep the authors laughing from start to finish.
Whether your little one loves pigs, costumes, or candy, this episode is sure to become a Halloween favorite.
Amy Doslich is the author and illustrator behind the beloved Hannah Banana and Mary Berry series, a collection inspired by her two daughters. Her stories are known for their warmth, humor, and family-centered adventures.
Samantha Howard-Els brings her own sparkle as the creator of the Mungo series and Tiny Boo, books that mix kindness, curiosity, and Halloween fun.
Together, Amy and Sam guide each episode with playful energy and a shared love for helping children discover the magic of storytelling.
This time, they’re joined by the creative duo behind A BaKon Wrapped Halloween—Janine Masi Landreth and Leigh Ann Thompson. The pair are known for their BaKon series, which includes Everybody Loves BaKon and What’s Shakin’ BaKon? Each story follows BaKon, a lovable pig with a big personality and even bigger heart.
In A BaKon Wrapped Halloween, readers meet BaKon, a cheerful pig on a mission to find the perfect Halloween costume. His trusty sidekick, Midnight the cat, joins him as they try out all sorts of spooky looks—from bumblebee wings to witch hats to tiger stripes.
The story unfolds in sing-song rhyme, filled with Halloween puns and candy chaos. Young readers follow along as BaKon tries on outfit after outfit, struggling to choose between silly and spooky costumes.
Between the colorful illustrations and bouncy rhythm, kids can’t help but giggle, and parents will enjoy the subtle jokes tucked between the rhymes.
When BaKon finally settles on his costume, it’s clear the story isn’t just about dressing up. It’s about embracing who you are, being kind, and—of course—enjoying a little candy along the way.
After the read-aloud, the spotlight shifts to the kids who ask the authors questions that range from logical to laugh-out-loud funny.
Here are a few favorites from the session:
“Why did you choose a pig as the main character?”
Janine says she chose a pig because of the irony and humor of naming the character “BaKon.” She also points out visual jokes in the book—like the “I ❤️ Bacon” shirt—which tie back to their own New York roots. (In short: the pig idea started as a funny, playful concept and the details grew from that joke.)
“Who makes costumes for pigs? Do they come from a special shop?”
They answered playfully: yes — the costumes come from the fictional “Piggy Magical Store.” In the world of the book, everything is custom-fit for BaKon’s round belly and piggy face, because picture-book worlds let you invent fun solutions like that.
“Where did all the candy from the bucket go?”
The authors suggested a mischievous, kid-friendly explanation: maybe other kids took it, or maybe it’s hiding behind a tree or pumpkin. Their pick: someone probably stole the candy — which is why BaKon looks so upset in the tiger scene.
“If you made a part two, what would happen to BaKon after eating all the candy?”
Janine and Leigh Ann joked that they wouldn’t make him “explode,” but he might get a belly ache and need a nap. They also offered a kinder ending idea: BaKon might share or give away a lot of his candy — since BaKon is portrayed as generous and sweet-hearted.
While A BaKon Wrapped Halloween is full of candy jokes and costume fun, it also delivers valuable takeaways for young readers:
Be Yourself: No costume can outshine being true to who you are.
Be Kind: Halloween is about sharing fun, not fear.
Be Creative: Imagination is the best part of growing up—and storytelling is one of its best outlets.
Teachers and parents can use this book to start conversations about self-expression, confidence, and creativity—making it a great classroom or bedtime pick during the spooky season. Check out some lesson plans to accompany the story here.
