Don't forget to watch the read along before or while you are doing the activities :D
Create a miniature version of a Little Library using a shoebox to pretend play and practice sharing books at home.
Instructions:
Take an empty shoebox and cut a large flap in the lid to act as the door.
Paint the outside of the box bright colors, just like the Little Libraries seen in neighborhoods.
Once dry, let your child select 3-4 of their own books to place inside.
Roleplay being a 'Steward' by tidying the box and recommending books to family members.
You will need:
A daily affirmation activity where children decorate a mirror to remind them of their worth, just like Twisty learned.
Instructions:
Clean the mirror surface thoroughly.
Ask your child to say three things they like about themselves (e.g., I am kind, I am a reader, I am helpful).
Help them write these words on the mirror using dry erase markers (or use stickers on the frame).
Place the mirror at their height and encourage them to look in it and say the words every morning.
You will need:
Teach respect for books by setting up a 'clinic' to examine and repair any torn or worn-out books in the house.
Instructions:
Gather a pile of books from your shelves that might need a little love.
Put on the toy stethoscope and examine the books for 'injuries' like ripped pages or bent covers.
Use the specialized book tape to carefully repair the tears.
Discuss how taking care of books ensures they can travel to other readers in the future.
You will need:
Create a logbook to track where books 'travel' within the house or among friends.
Instructions:
Label the notebook 'Book Passport'.
Choose a favorite book to be the 'Traveler'.
Take the book to different 'destinations' (the kitchen, the blanket fort, the backyard, grandma's house).
Stamp the passport for every new place the book is read.
You will need:
Paint rocks with encouraging messages to hide in the neighborhood, spreading the same joy Twisty felt when she was found.
Instructions:
Wash and dry the rocks.
Paint the rocks with bright colors and write simple words like 'Read', 'Joy', 'You Matter', or 'Smile'.
Once dry, take a walk to a local park or near a Little Library.
Hide the rocks for other children to find to brighten their day.
